"Al-Jami‘ al-Safi": A Methodological Framework for Hadith Purification Based on the Qur'anic Standard of Evidence

The Science of Hadith constitutes the magnificent intellectual heritage of Islamic Sharia, forming the foundation of our civilization and religious understanding. For centuries, Hadith scholars (Muhadditheen) have rendered unparalleled services in preserving the Prophetic tradition. However, in light of contemporary intellectual challenges, Orientalist critiques, and the cognitive dissonance faced by new Muslims, it has become imperative to evaluate the Hadith corpus against a robust principle established by the Creator in the Holy Qur'an.

With this necessity in mind, we have initiated a unique scholarly project titled "Al-Jami‘ al-Safi". This project shifts the paradigm from reliance on solitary reports (Khabar al-Wahid, specifically Khabar al-Ghareeb) to the Qur'anic "Standard of Evidence" (Mi‘yar al-Shahadah).

1. The Core Principle: The Threshold of Evidence in Qur'anic Law

Allah (SWT) has prescribed a minimum threshold for establishing truth in the Qur'an: "And bring to witness two witnesses from among your men." (Al-Baqarah: 282) This principle is not merely for financial transactions; it is a universal divine protocol for verifying truth. If Allah deems a single testimony insufficient for mundane worldly affairs or legal punishments, how can we rely on a solitary narrator (Khabar al-Ghareeb) for critical matters of creed (Aqeedah), faith, and the life of the Prophet ﷺ? The Qur'an asserts that when the required evidence is not met, the claimants are considered liars in the sight of Allah.

2. Human Fallibility and the Nuance of Tone (Conceptual Explanation)

No human, regardless of their integrity, is immune to forgetfulness, illusion, or misconception. The Qur'an explains the wisdom behind two witnesses: "so if one of them errs, the other can remind her." The Example of Linguistic Tone: Identical words can carry opposite meanings depending on the tone. The phrase "What is this!" could imply a rebuke, a genuine inquiry, or profound admiration. If a solitary narrator captures the words but fails to perceive the Prophet's ﷺ specific tone or context, they may transmit a meaning contrary to the intended message. To eliminate such margins of error, we mandate a minimum of two narrators.

3. Intellectual and Rational Contradictions Arising from Solitary Reports

The unconditional acceptance of Khabar al-Ghareeb has allowed reports to enter the discourse that contradict sound reason, history, and the sanctity of Prophethood:

The Age of Lady Aisha (RA): The report claiming her age was 9 at marriage is a solitary chain. Contrarily, another report in Bukhari (Book of Tafsir) indicates she was a young woman reciting Surah al-Qamar in the streets of Mecca years before the migration.

Dignity of the Prophets: Reports attributing "three lies" to Prophet Ibrahim (AS) or depicting Prophet Musa (AS) striking the Angel of Death contradict the Quranic concept of Prophetic infallibility (Ismah).

Scientific and Social Discrepancies: Narrations suggesting "misfortune in women, houses, and horses" or the sun "prostrating under the Throne" conflict with Islamic gender dignity and modern astronomical observations, respectively. These solitary reports often become a catalyst for atheism among the youth.

4. Methodology of "Al-Jami‘ al-Safi"

Our objective is not to negate authentic works but to purify and defend the Sunnah:

Selection Criteria: Only Mutawatir (Mass-transmitted), Mashhur (min. 3 narrators), and Aziz (min. 2 narrators) reports will be included.

Exclusion of Ghareeb: Reports relying on a single narrator at any stage will be excluded from the primary evidentiary framework, as religion is based on Yaqeen (Certainty), not Zann (Speculation).

5. A Global Call to Action for Scholars

"Al-Jami‘ al-Safi" is a non-profit, global initiative. We invite scholars holding M.Phil. or Ph.D. degrees in Islamic Studies with a passion for Hadith research and proficiency in international languages (English, German, French, Malay, etc.) to join this noble cause. Your contribution will be highlighted in this Sadaqah Jariyah, serving as a beacon of faith for future generations.
