ALJAME ALSAAFI : Authenticating the Prophetic Legacy through the Quranic Standard of Testimony

The Science of Hadith: Authenticating the Prophetic Legacy through the Quranic Standard of Testimony

Al-Jami‘ al-Saafi Project

The Science of Hadith is that great treasure of Islamic Sharia upon which our civilization and understanding of religion are built. For centuries, the noble scholars of Hadith have rendered unparalleled services in preserving the traditions. However, in light of modern intellectual challenges, objections raised by Orientalists, and the mental confusion faced by new Muslims, it has become essential to evaluate the Hadith corpus based on a firm principle established by the Creator Himself in the Holy Qur'an.

With this need in view, we have initiated a unique scholarly project titled "Al-Jami‘ al-Safi", which is based not on solitary reports (Khabar Wahid—especially Khabar Gharib), but on the Qur'anic "Standard of Testimony" (Mi‘yār al-Shahādah).

Fundamental Principle: Standard of Testimony and Qur'anic Law

Allah Almighty has established a minimum threshold to prove truth in any matter in the Qur'an, which we call the Standard of Testimony. Allah says:

"And bring to witness two witnesses from among your men." (Al-Baqarah: 282)

This principle is not limited to financial transactions; rather, it is a universal divine rule for establishing truth. If in worldly matters and legal punishments a single testimony is deemed insufficient, how can we rely on a single narrator (Khabar Gharib) in sensitive matters such as beliefs, faith, and the life of the Prophet ﷺ?

The Qur'an declares that when testimony is incomplete, the claimant is considered false before Allah.

Human Error and the Role of Tone (Simple Explanation)

No matter how truthful or upright a person is, they cannot be free from forgetfulness, illusion, or misunderstanding. The wisdom behind requiring two witnesses is that if one forgets, the other can remind him.

Example of tone difference:

The same words can convey different meanings depending on tone. For example: "What's the matter?"

  • First tone (rebuke): Said harshly, it implies scolding for wrongdoing.
  • Second tone (question): Said normally, it seeks information.
  • Third tone (praise): Said warmly, it expresses admiration.

Now imagine if a single narrator heard only the words but failed to grasp the tone, he might transmit something completely opposite to what the Prophet ﷺ intended. This is why we require at least two narrators—to eliminate misunderstanding.

Intellectual and Rational Contradictions Arising from Khabar Gharib

Once solitary reports began to be used as evidence, narrations appeared that seem contrary to reason, history, and the dignity of Prophethood.

A. The Age of Sayyidah Aisha (RA)

A narration in Sahih al-Bukhari states her age as 9 at the time of marriage consummation, reported through a single chain. However, another narration indicates she was old enough during the revelation of Surah Al-Qamar to be playing and reciting verses. Considering historical timelines, her age could not have been 9. Other historical data (such as the age of Asma (RA) and participation in Battle of Badr) further supports this discrepancy.

B. Concerns Regarding the Dignity of Prophets

  • Prophet Ibrahim (AS): A narration attributes "three lies" to him, which contradicts prophetic infallibility.
  • Prophet Musa (AS): Narrations describing striking a stone or hitting the Angel of Death are based on single reports and appear inconsistent with prophetic dignity.
  • The Prophet ﷺ: Narrations mentioning suicidal thoughts or the "Satanic verses" incident contradict the protection of revelation and are based on solitary reports.

C. Issues in Seerah and Social Narrations

  • The incident of Asma bint Nu'man seeking refuge from the Prophet ﷺ
  • The concept of bad omen in women, houses, and horses
  • Scientific inconsistencies (e.g., the sun prostrating beneath the Throne)
  • Narrations of disputes among Companions based on single chains

Such reports, due to being solitary, have contributed to confusion and even atheistic tendencies among modern youth.

Methodology of "Al-Jami‘ al-Saafi"

This project does not aim to reject authentic books but to purify Hadith and defend Sunnah. The methodology includes:

  • Selection of Reliable Categories: Only Mutawatir, Mashhoor (minimum 3 narrators), and Aziz (minimum 2 narrators) Hadith will be included.
  • Exclusion of Khabar Gharib: Any narration relying on a single narrator at any stage will be excluded, because religion is based on certainty, not conjecture.

A Global Call: Invitation to Scholars
